Amibroker data feed glossary

AFL (AmiBroker Formula Language)
The scripting language AmiBroker uses for indicators, scans, explorations and trading systems. See the AFL guide.
Backfill
Loading past data into your AmiBroker database so charts and tests have history. Amiprofits provides 1 year of 1-minute backfill. See backfill explained.
Bar (candle)
One period of price data, usually showing open, high, low, close and volume. A 1-minute bar covers one minute of trading.
Data feed
A service that delivers market prices to AmiBroker, either live or as history. See how a data feed works.
Data plugin
The component that connects AmiBroker to a data source. AmiBroker documents how quotes reach the program in its official guide on quotes and data sources.
Database (AmiBroker)
The folder where AmiBroker stores the symbols and price history you chart and test. Each database is set up for one kind of data, such as end of day or intraday.
Delayed data
Prices that arrive a fixed time after the market moves. It is fine for review, but a poor fit for intraday signals. See real-time vs delayed data.
End of day (EOD) data
One bar per trading day. Suited to swing and positional testing. Amiprofits includes 20 years of end of day data. See NSE end of day data.
Exploration and scan
AFL tools that run your rules across many symbols and list the ones that match.
Intraday data
Price data at periods shorter than a day, such as 1 minute or 5 minutes. See Amibroker intraday data.
Latency
The delay between a price change in the market and that change showing on your chart. See latency in a data feed.
Real-time data
Prices that update as trades happen. Amiprofits delivers real-time tick data at up to 100 updates a second.
Symbol (ticker)
The code that identifies an instrument in AmiBroker, such as a stock, index or contract.
Tick data
Every individual price update, not a summary bar. See tick data vs 1-minute data.
Watchlist
A saved group of symbols you track together. A long live watchlist can slow an older PC, so keep it to what you trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tick data and 1-minute data?

Tick data records every price update. One-minute data summarises each minute into a single bar. Tick data is more detailed, and 1-minute data is lighter and easier to store and test.

What is backfill in AmiBroker?

Backfill loads past prices into your AmiBroker database so you have history for charts and backtests. Amiprofits includes 1 year of 1-minute backfill.

Do I need real-time data for end of day trading?

Not usually. End of day trading works with one bar per day, so end of day data is enough. Amiprofits includes 20 years of end of day history.
